New Moon in Capricorn | December 30, 2024

As 2024 comes to a close, the New Moon in Capricorn offers a powerful opportunity to pause, reflect, and lay the groundwork for your intentions and goals in 2025. This is a Moon that will help us close out 2024 while also helping us open to the shifts we will all collectively experience in 2025.

This might be the year of change, but don’t let this stop you from going after those goals and intentions! I’m personally looking at 2025 as a “leveling up” year for myself. I haven’t decided if that will be my word for the year yet, but I’m still looking at the year in that way. Shifts might happen, but it doesn’t mean it’s bad. If anything, these shifts could really help your intentions!

For now, take some time to ground into the energy of this New Moon in Capricorn. If you haven’t already, make some space to process everything that happened over 2024 for you – both the good and the bad. Reflect on the lessons you learned and the good memories you shared. From there, you can start to build on how you want to enter 2025.

Just one note: Don’t feel like you HAVE to have all your New Year intentions and goals perfectly laid out and ready to tackle by January 1. New Moons are a great time to set our intentions (especially the New Moon in Capricorn since it always coincides around the start of the New Year), so if you have a clear picture of how you want 2025 to go, then great! However, with Mars in retrograde right now until the end of February, we may not have the drive or clarity to determine what it is we truly want and how to take action towards them (yet). Also, Capricorn is about building the foundations first, so that may just be planning for now and waiting to take action later.

So with the energy of this New Moon supporting us, take some time to reflect. If you feel called to work on your vision boards then absolutely go for it. Otherwise, start with these questions and journal them out the next day or two before the start of the New Year:

Reflection Questions for the New Moon in Capricorn 2024:

  1. What did you enjoy about 2024?
  2. What challenges occurred for you and how did you navigate them? What were the lessons you learned from those challenges that you’ll take with you into 2025?
  3. List out the visions you have of yourself for 2025. What do you want to accomplish? Whom do you want to become? How do you want to FEEL by the end of 2025?
  4. Based on your dreams and visions you listed out, where might you have to “double down” and be willing to do the work to accomplish those dreams?
  5. What is one word, phrase, feeling, or visual for the year ahead?

Lean into Virgo energy to release any tension on this New Moon…

The good news is that there is a release for this tension. The release point is through the energy of Virgo. This means that if you embody some Virgo-ness, regardless on whether or not you resonate with Virgo energy, you’ll feel less tension and a bit freer. One way to do this is by cleaning, purging, and organizing to get rid of anything you don’t want to bring with you into 2025 and to create space for your New Year intentions. This can be going through your closet and getting rid of clothes you no longer wear and don’t align with who you are becoming, deep cleaning your bathroom to make it a sanctuary for yourself, or maybe organizing your phone by getting rid of apps you no longer use. These are just a few examples, but do whatever feels best for you in this moment!

Allow your intentions and goals to be flexible…

So, as I mentioned, Mars is still in retrograde until the end of February. Shortly after that, Venus goes retrograde followed by Mercury retrograde, as well as our first eclipse season of 2025. We won’t get a reprieve of all these energies until mid April – after the astrological New Year and near the start of Taurus Season.

The reason I bring this is up is because I see the first quarter of 2025 feeling like trudging through mud. We can move forward, and we will, but it’s going to be slow and it will need to be highly intentional. With the inner, personal planets (Mars, Venus, Mercury) all going retrograde at some point during that time, it will slow us all down to reflect, review and revise (as is the case with any retrograde). With an eclipse season in there as well, things may feel a bit all over the place. Our intentions and goals may, therefore, change over the next couple months. So as you reflect and as you start setting those intentions, don’t feel you have to stick to them for the entire year. Let them shift and change, just as 2025 is a year of shifting and changing.

I do suggest taking small, baby steps towards those goals you have, though. Just don’t be too discouraged if you don’t see immediate results. Also, don’t be discouraged if you just don’t have the motivation right now. Mars retrograde means the planet of action and drive is taking a vacation. He’s on a beach somewhere sipping a margarita, with no intention of moving fast or wanting to do anything. This doesn’t mean we can’t do anything the next couple months, but it does mean we need to think things through before taking action. We will be tested by the Universe and asked if those intentions and goals we have are TRULY aligned with ourselves and our souls.

What Capricorn reminds us to do…

The other thing is that Capricorn reminds us we have to be willing to put in the work. We have to take responsibility for achieving the goals we set for ourselves. As with any manifestation work, things don’t just “magically” happen. Intention setting and manifestation are both part visualization and part putting in the work to make it happen. So though the personal planets may be retrograde and slowing us down, we still need to be willing to take the small steps necessary to go after the things we truly, in our heart-of-hearts, want.

Capricorn, as an Earth sign, also gives us the reality check we all need. As you reflect on 2024, if there was anything you didn’t make progress on that you want to recommit to in 2025, maybe ask yourself if it is truly aligned for you in this very moment in your life. Maybe you subconsciously blocked yourself from it because deep within your soul you weren’t ready. Or maybe the Universe kept you from that thing you wanted because it knows more than you and knew you weren’t ready yet.

The flip side of this reality check is asking yourself if you truly put in the work and stepped outside of your comfort zone to make your goals happen. For instance, maybe you truly did want to lose weight this past year, but because you didn’t know where to start you gave up. Or maybe going to the gym was too uncomfortable for you so you just stopped going. In reality, you probably really needed to look into investing resources to hire a health coach or give yourself a little kick in the booty to keep showing up. Instead, you always found excuses to not make it happen.

Or maybe you wanted to start that side business you’ve been dreaming of. You may have taken a few small steps like setting up a website or doing some market research, but you soon gave up because it became too confusing and challenging. You convinced yourself you “couldn’t do it” and, again, found any excuse you could to claim why you couldn’t follow through for fear of feeling uncomfortable again.

I know that was the case for me. I had goals for 2024 that, though I made some progress, didn’t make as much progress as I had hoped. In some cases, it just wasn’t the right time for me. In others, it was because I held myself back out of fear.

For instance, one of my goals for this past year was to start my own business. But to start my own business meant I needed to start showing up more online and get clear on what the business was meant to be. I made some progress – I built this website, started a blog, and slowly started showing up on my social media accounts more. However, I held myself back for a good chunk of the year because (1) it wasn’t the right time and (2) out of fear.

Now, I don’t feel all that bad about it because I realize now I had some more healing to do. This past year was a “reset” year for me where I was really focused on healing myself – mind, body and spirit. But, I also am giving myself the reality check to realize that I didn’t make as much progress as I wanted because I did, to some extent, hold myself back out of fear.

Though there are always exceptions to these examples, I find a lot of our dreams and goals don’t happen because putting in the work to make it happen makes us feel uncomfortable. We’re doing something new, and anything new requires some level of discomfort. Unfortunately, us humans will do anything to not feel uncomfortable, so we continue to just settle for what we already know – because what we already know is comfortable.

So as you set those New Year intentions, be willing to give yourself the reality check you need. We all need it from time-to-time. But also, don’t be afraid if the intentions you set change. What we think we want now is allowed to change. That’s the beauty of being human – we’re allowed to change our minds!

Happy New Moon and Happy New Year! 🥂
